Welcome to Starbox Hostel
Starbox Hostel stands as a budget-friendly option in the heart of Taipei’s vibrant Datong District. Nestled on Nanjing West Road, it offers travelers straightforward access to local gems like Ningxia Night Market, just a kilometer away, and Huashan 1914 Creative Park within a short distance. The location alone makes it a strong choice for visitors eager to explore Taipei’s bustling street life and authentic food scene.
With a 3.6 rating, Starbox reflects a mix of practicality and modest comfort. The hostel is notably affordable, especially for those booking monthly, making it ideal for backpackers and solo travelers who prioritize cost-efficiency. Rooms feature wide beds with privacy curtains, giving a surprising sense of personal space despite the otherwise compact and tight quarters. However, the corridors are narrow, and common social spaces are limited to small tables designed more for takeout dining than large gatherings.
Cleanliness here is functional rather than flawless. Guests have reported occasional sightings of small roaches and an air-conditioning system that can be inconsistent—cold near vents but warm otherwise, with a default setting that may induce light discomfort during sleep. Despite these minor drawbacks, many appreciate the attentive and polite staff, whose warm hospitality often elevates the overall experience and fosters a welcoming, family-like atmosphere.
Among the hostel’s practical perks are free Wi-Fi and access to laundry facilities at reasonable rates, which add convenience for longer stays. Safety is another plus, supported by 24-hour security at the entrance—a valuable assurance for travelers arriving late or leaving early. While there is no free breakfast, parking, or shuttle services, the surrounding neighborhood’s vibrant food markets and efficient public transport links compensate well for these omissions.
Ultimately, Starbox Hostel caters to the traveler who values location and budget over luxury. It may not offer the polished sheen of an upscale capsule hotel, but it compensates with genuine charm and utility. For first-time solo travelers or those eager to dive into Taipei’s urban energy without breaking the bank, Starbox presents a practical and heartfelt base.

This is the best located and cheapest hostel in all of Taipei, if you book monthly. Is it super clean, not really. Is it quiet, not when it fully books up on the weekends. Does the AC blow super cold, yes, but only if you are in a bunk near the vent, because the temperature was often set to 26C while I was there, so you sweat a little while you sleep. You will see little roaches occasionally in the bathroom and common area, but no mosquitos or bugs at all in the dorm areas. The good is the price, location, and the clean sheets and comforter. The capsule style bunks are sturdy and solid, not like the creaky, metal, ones you find in most places. It has free wifi with reliable, good speeds, hot water, and great AC if you can get management to lower the temp. Security is great with a private security guard that will have to let you up to the proper floor. If you booked online, like I did, you may have to communicate heavily with the staff to make sure you will be let in. Many people, every day, were locked out and couldn’t get in, because there was no staff to let them in when they arrived. You may get lucky and someone may open the door for you, or you may just be stuck in the hallway for hours. Overall, it was a perfect place for me. I had no issues at all. The staff was very nice and helpful to me. Thank you J and C. You know who you are.
Just across from Ningxia night market but little further from the nearest MRT stations(10-15mins walk) There is a ubike station right below it outside the Starbucks cutting it to 5mins. The hostel is a little cramp but cozy, there is no common space for a large crowd to mingle and little tables for takeouts. The bed is wide and had privacy curtains. Overall adequate for a hostel.
I went to this Hostel on the first night I reached Taiwan. The place was easy to find but I waited for around 20 mins at the door because no one was there One of the guests came out and finally I was able to get in. After around 5 mins, the boss came back and proceeded with my check in. Overall were good, the room quite clean but feeling a bit packed because of the narrow corridor. It was a very quiet environment although there were many guests at the moment. The bathroom and toilet were small, but still able to have a proper shower in it. The location was good, only 10 mins walk to the NingXia night market. Everything was fine if you are not so particular about the environment, if you are an experienced back packer, you are absolutely good here.
Nice atención, excelente location and the bed is good compare with the others and you can enjoy washer and dryer provided by this hostel at a good bargain.
As a first-time solo traveler in Taiwan, I highly recommend this place. Despite its affordable price, it resembles an upscale capsule hotel. The location is convenient, being close to the station and surrounded by many stores. The staff are very accommodating, especially when it comes to communication—they genuinely try to assist and meet your needs whenever possible. The facilities are impressive; they provide a cabinet for your bags and offer complimentary drinks to guests. Overall, a great stay! Will book and back again here, soon!
Great value. Clean, conform and big bund bed. Helping and polite staff made you feel like stay in big family. Night market, mrt station, bus stop. All can be reach by walk.
The hotel staff was consistently attentive and professional, providing prompt and efficient service offering complimentary cold drinks. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a low budget hostel to stay.
The price is reasonable and the location is convenient. The overall space and bed size match the price! It is close to convenience stores and night markets, and the gate has 24-hour security.
